The fiber itself
Polyester is a thermoplastic polymer that does not readily break down or release its components at room temperature. As a floor covering it is chemically unremarkable.
What to actually scrutinize
Added stain finishes, antimicrobial treatments, adhesives in tufted construction and attached foam backings are where the meaningful questions live.
Microfibers
Synthetic textiles shed microfibers through wear and washing. This is an environmental concern more than an indoor-air one, but it is real.
New rug smell
Odor from a new synthetic rug usually comes from the backing and adhesives, not the pile. It fades with ventilation.
