Fiber structure
Wool fibers are crimped and scaled, which is why wool springs back from compression and hides soil. Cotton fibers are smooth and flat, which is why cotton mats down but launders cleanly.
Moisture
Wool holds moisture inside the fiber and repels light surface spills through lanolin. Cotton wicks liquid immediately.
Cleaning
Cotton goes in a washer. Wool felts if you try, so it needs spot cleaning and periodic professional care.
Lifespan and cost
Cotton rugs typically serve several years; hand-knotted wool rugs serve decades. Compare on cost per year, not sticker price.
