Are Wool Rugs Good for Nurseries?

Wool is a wonderful fiber with one nursery-specific problem: you cannot put it in a washing machine.

What wool does well

It is soft, naturally flame-resistant without added chemicals, resilient under crawling and play, and it regulates temperature on a cold floor.

The shedding period

New wool rugs shed for three to six months. In a nursery that means loose fiber on hands and clothing until it settles.

The cleaning problem

Diaper leaks, spit-up and milk are the defining nursery accidents, and none of them are convenient on an unwashable rug.

Our take

Wool is an excellent second rug for a nursery once the heaviest mess years pass. For a newborn, washable cotton is the practical answer.
