What Makes a Rug Non-Toxic?

"Non-toxic" is not a regulated term for rugs. Here is the definition we use on this site, and the six things we look at before applying it to any product.

1. Fiber content, disclosed in full

A rug should state its fiber content by percentage. Marketing names like 'soft touch fiber' usually mean polyester or polypropylene. Natural fibers — cotton, wool, jute — are not automatically safer, but they are easier to evaluate.

2. Dye chemistry

Dyes are where restricted substances most often appear in textiles. Look for testing against a restricted-substance list, such as OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, applied to the finished rug.

3. Backing material

Attached foam, latex and PVC backings are common in inexpensive rugs and are a frequent source of odor and off-gassing. A rug with no attached backing, paired with a separate felt-and-natural-rubber pad, avoids the issue.

4. Adhesives

Hand-tufted rugs are held together with latex adhesive. Over time that adhesive dries, cracks and sheds. Woven and hand-knotted rugs use no glue at all.

5. Added stain finishes

Factory stain-repellent treatments have historically relied on PFAS chemistry. An untreated washable rug is generally the better answer for a household worried about this.

6. Certification tied to the finished product

A yarn certificate is not a rug certificate. We only publish a certification when documentation covers the finished item a reader would buy.
