How to Choose a Non-Toxic Rug
Use this sequence when you are looking at a specific listing and trying to decide whether it clears the bar.

Start with the fiber line
If the listing will not tell you the fiber content, stop there. Every legitimate manufacturer publishes it.
Find the backing
Search the listing for 'backing'. No answer usually means an attached synthetic backing the brand would rather not discuss.
Ask for the certificate number
Email support and ask for the GOTS or OEKO-TEX certificate number covering the finished rug. A brand with real certification answers quickly.
Check for stain treatments
Any mention of built-in stain resistance is worth a follow-up question about the chemistry used.
Plan for airing out
Even a clean rug benefits from unrolling in a ventilated space for a day or two before use.
