Best: cotton, ideally certified organic
Soft, breathable, washable and simple to verify. Certified organic cotton adds traceability through processing.
Good: wool, with caveats
Excellent comfort and natural flame resistance, but shedding and the lack of machine washability limit it early on.
Acceptable: undyed jute or sisal in play corners
Durable and natural, but too coarse for tummy time.
Avoid: attached foam backings and stain finishes
These are the two features most likely to introduce odor and unnecessary chemistry into a small room.
