Size and placement
Aim to cover the floor between the crib, the glider and the changing area. A 5x7 works in most standard nurseries; a 6x9 suits larger rooms.
Pile height
Low and dense. High pile slows crawling, traps crumbs and takes far longer to dry after washing.
Material
Cotton is the default. It is soft, washable and easy to evaluate. Wool is lovely but not launderable.
Grip and safety
Always use a non-slip pad. A rug that shifts under a toddler learning to walk is a real hazard.
Design that lasts
Choose something that still works when the crib becomes a bed.
